“My name is Ragamuffin. I am an Art teacher at a public school, a wife, mother, have two dogs and two cats, and I Love Derby!!! I started with the Soul City Sirens right after the Low Down, Throw Down about six months ago in the spring of 2015. This was a two day tournament of teams around the US. I was there for both days with my Mom, Billie Jean. I didn’t know what roller derby was all about, but I had decided a few years before I was going to join. I sat beside Penny (Stitckabich), a veteran skater. She started giving me the low down on what derby was all about and before I knew it I had a little understanding. In the restroom I ran into two other skaters on the Soul City Sirens team and after telling them I was coming out for their Monday night recruitment, they told me I might make a great Jammer. Whatever that meant I didn’t know at the time.
Monday Recruitment night came and was interesting. I remember a feeling of excitement, confusion, and just wanting to skate. It was a little crazy and fortunately I wasn’t alone. I met Nina and Kaitlyn who were at practice for their first time too! I continue to build my friendships as time goes on. I am now part of the Street Crew and promote our team as often as possible. As far as my skating, I have continued to improve not only with my techniques, but also in mind, body, and spirit. The track is a place where I can recheck myself and work on skills. Things that I once dreaded, like the knee taps without using my hands, I now do well and don’t even think about them anymore as dreadful. I have made some great friendships with the Vets and have realized that it is possible to bond on the track. However, I have found that getting together outside of practice, whether it is to recruit new skaters, promote for a bout, promote the Soul City Sirens, or just to hang out…This is where the friendship glue gets even stronger. I really love Derby and I really love my teammates!”
