Day Job: Graphic Designer
Skate Gear of Choice: When I first joined the team I developed some serious knee pain so I upgraded to 187s for my knee + elbow pads (which are amazing) – plus I never skate without my knee braces. I also really like my Sure-Grip Shock Toe Stops.
Pre-Bout Ritual: Hydrate + Stretch
Favorite Motivational Quote: “And though she be but little, she is fierce.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare
Theme Song: We Are 138 by Misfits
How long have you been in Roller Derby? I’ve been with the team for about 9 months now
How did you get involved with the sport? I’ve always loved roller skating but never dreamed I could ever actually play Roller Derby. But when I heard about a bootcamp in November 2015 I figured that would be my best shot to try it out – and I immediately fell in love with the sport.
Describe your experience learning to play Roller Derby: It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but it’s so rewarding. I’m constantly stepping out of my comfort zone, learning new things and challenging myself – and I’ve met alot of great girls who constantly inspire me.
What is your Pre-Derby athletic background? I bounced around alot when I was a kid (Cheerleading, Ballet, Swimming, Basketball, etc.) but nothing ever stuck. So other than being pretty flexible thanks to yoga – I came into Derby with zero athletic background. And jumping into a contact sport (on skates) was super intimidating but I’m so glad I did it.
Have you sustained any Derby-related injuries? So far I’ve just had a bruised rib.
What’s the story behind your Derby name? I really like the 90s movie Jawbreaker and I thought that made a good name since it sounds violent + sweet – my # came from one of my favorite Misfits songs. (coming up with a nickname was almost as difficult as the actual training)
How would you describe your playing style? I don’t think I really have a playing style yet since I’ve only been in a few scrimmages. I’m really just focusing on using everything I’ve learned at practice and not being so timid on the track.
What do you like to do when you’re off the track? I really love traveling – I like exploring new places & trying new things. I also like cooking, reading, drinking coffee, and just hanging out with friends.
What’s been your favorite Derby Moment so far? I recently got lead jammer and scored points at our last scrimmage in Charleston – so that felt really great.
Why do you play Roller Derby? Playing derby is super fun – it challenges me physically & mentally.
Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to play Roller Derby? If you’re worried you can’t play derby for whatever reason (can’t skate, out of shape, too old, etc.) please come out and try it. We have girls from every walk of life out here – you CAN do it.
